Professor Andrew M. Wardley is an internationally recognised medical oncologist and translational scientist with over 30 years’ experience shaping modern cancer services in the UK and globally. A leader in breast cancer research and experimental medicine, he has driven major advances in precision and personalised oncology, led landmark clinical trials, and ensured patient access through national policy and NICE engagement. He has played a pivotal role in building Manchester as a leading European cancer research hub, transforming clinical services, governance, and system efficiency within the NHS. As a national leader in oncology policy and workforce strategy, his work continues to influence cancer care standards, access to innovation, and patient outcomes, underpinned by a commitment to integrity, compassion, and evidence-based care

The UK fell from 4th to 10th in clinical trial performance between 2018 and 2022. UK delivery of industry-run trials dropped by 44%. This deprives patients, clinicians, clinical sites, the NHS, and the economy from the benefits of improved health outcomes. This is also seen in cancer survival outcomes in UK being worse than similar countries across the world.
The UK is lagging other countries with no signs of improvements. The current NHS workforce and skills crisis requires new collaborations to reverse this decline.
In 2020, as part of his continual commitment to health inequalities, Professor Wardley developed, a model of care increasing access through a unified approach combining multiple business and commercial models aimed at sustainable business, service and product innovation.
